About DoCompare

About DoCompare

DoCompare helps people across the UK make smarter financial decisions, not by telling you which company to choose, but by helping you work out what to do in the first place.

Decision-first

We compare choices, not just providers, starting with the question that actually matters.

Honest

We give the real answer, even when it means recommending you do nothing at all.

Built for the UK

Every figure, rule and example is specific to British consumers, never generic.

Transparent

We show our methodology, label commercial links, and date every page.

What we do

Most comparison websites answer the question "which provider is cheapest?". DoCompare answers a different, more useful question: "should I do A or B?". Should you buy an electric car or stick with petrol? Rent or buy? Overpay your mortgage or invest the difference? Fix your energy tariff or stay variable? These are the decisions that genuinely affect your finances, and they are exactly the questions most comparison sites skip over. We break each decision down into a clear comparison, back it with an honest calculator so you can test it against your own numbers, and support it with plain-English guides that explain the things you need to know.

Why we built it

Financial decisions in the UK are harder than they should be. The information is scattered, often written to sell you something, and rarely explained in language a normal person can follow. We wanted to build the opposite: a place where the comparison comes first, the maths is transparent, and the honest answer is given even when it is not the answer a salesperson would want you to hear. Sometimes the right call is to do nothing. Sometimes renting really is smarter than buying. We would rather tell you that than push you toward a decision that benefits us more than it benefits you.

How we make money

DoCompare is free to use and always will be. We fund the site in two ways. First, through advertising shown around our content. Second, through affiliate partnerships where, if you choose to take out a product after reading our content, the provider may pay us a small commission at no extra cost to you. These partnerships never influence our comparisons or our verdicts. We do not rank options by who pays us, we do not hide better alternatives, and we clearly label any commercial link. Our editorial content and our commercial relationships are kept strictly separate. If a comparison concludes that the cheaper or better option is one we earn nothing from, we say so plainly.

How we keep our figures accurate

Everything on DoCompare is built specifically for the UK and kept current. Our calculators use official figures including HMRC income tax bands, National Insurance thresholds, the Ofgem energy price cap, the Bank of England base rate and live fuel prices. We review these regularly and update them when the underlying rates change, such as at the start of each tax year in April. Every calculator explains its methodology so you can see exactly how the numbers are worked out. Every comparison page shows when it was last updated. We would rather be transparent about our assumptions than ask you to trust a black box.

Our editorial principles

We follow a few simple rules on every page. Be honest, even when the honest answer is inconvenient. Use plain English, never jargon for its own sake. Show the working, so you can check it yourself. Keep commercial interests out of editorial judgements. And always write for the reader trying to make a real decision, not for a search engine or an advertiser. If we ever get this wrong, we want to hear about it, and we will fix it.

What we are not

DoCompare provides independent estimates and educational content. We are not financial advisers, and nothing on this site constitutes regulated financial advice. Our comparisons and calculators are designed to inform your thinking and help you ask better questions, not to replace personalised advice for your specific circumstances. For decisions involving significant sums, tax matters, mortgages or investments, we always recommend speaking to a qualified, regulated professional. Where relevant, we will point you toward where to get that advice.
