Appliance Running Cost Calculator

Estimate the electricity used by a household appliance and what it could cost to run on your tariff.

Inputs

Estimate electricity use and running cost for an appliance.

Finding an appliance power rating

Look for watts or kilowatts on the appliance label, product manual or manufacturer specification. Appliances with thermostats or variable power may not draw their full rated wattage throughout every use.

Why usage time matters

A high-power appliance used briefly can cost less than a lower-power appliance left running for many hours. Use a realistic average running time rather than the time the appliance is merely switched on.

Worked examples

Checking a tumble dryer

Enter the rated wattage, average cycle time, weekly uses and unit rate to estimate annual electricity consumption and cost.

How we calculate this

Watts are divided by 1,000 to convert power to kilowatts.

Kilowatts are multiplied by hours used to estimate kWh consumption.

Energy use is multiplied by the electricity unit rate. Standing charges are excluded because they apply to the household supply rather than one appliance.

FAQs

Will my actual cost match exactly?

Not necessarily. Appliance behaviour, tariff changes, standby use, household habits and billing periods can make the real figure different.

Does this include standby power?

Only if standby hours and wattage are included in the figures entered. The main estimate assumes the stated power applies during the running time.

Where can I find my electricity rate?

Check a recent bill, tariff statement or supplier account for the unit rate in pence per kWh.
