Electricity Cost Calculator

Estimate your household electricity bill using monthly kWh consumption, the tariff unit rate and daily standing charge.

Inputs

Estimate a household electricity bill including standing charge.

Unit rates and standing charges

The unit rate is charged for each kWh used. The standing charge is a fixed daily amount, so it still applies on days when very little electricity is consumed.

Using real consumption

A recent bill or smart-meter history gives a stronger estimate than a national average. Electricity use can vary considerably by heating type, property size, occupancy and season.

Worked examples

Household using 225 kWh a month

Enter 225 kWh with the tariff unit rate and daily standing charge to estimate the monthly energy charge and full annual cost.

How we calculate this

Monthly kWh is multiplied by the unit rate in pounds.

The daily standing charge is multiplied by 365 and divided by 12 for an average monthly amount.

The monthly energy charge and standing charge are added, then multiplied by 12 for the annual estimate.

FAQs

Will my actual cost match exactly?

Not necessarily. Appliance behaviour, tariff changes, standby use, household habits and billing periods can make the real figure different.

Does this include VAT?

Use the rates exactly as shown on your consumer tariff or bill. Those quoted rates normally include the applicable VAT.

Does this account for seasonal use?

It uses the monthly consumption entered as an average. For a stronger annual estimate, use total kWh from the previous year divided by 12.
