Heat Pump vs Boiler Calculator

Compare a heat pump and gas boiler using the home's heat demand, energy tariffs, system efficiency, installation cost and ownership period.

Inputs

Compare running and installation costs over your chosen period.

Efficiency changes energy use

A boiler must burn more gas than the useful heat delivered because efficiency is below 100%. A heat pump can deliver several units of heat for each unit of electricity, represented by its seasonal coefficient of performance.

Property suitability matters

Heat loss, radiator sizing, flow temperature, insulation and hot-water demand can affect real performance. A professional heat-loss calculation is more reliable than a generic annual demand estimate.

Worked examples

Comparing 15-year ownership

Enter annual useful heat demand, realistic seasonal efficiency, current tariff rates and net installation costs to compare annual and total costs.

How we calculate this

Useful heat demand is divided by boiler efficiency to estimate gas use.

Heat demand is divided by heat-pump COP to estimate electricity use.

Each energy use is multiplied by its unit rate, then running costs are added to installation cost across the chosen period. Standing charges, maintenance and replacement costs are excluded.

FAQs

Will my actual cost match exactly?

Not necessarily. Appliance behaviour, tariff changes, standby use, household habits and billing periods can make the real figure different.

What COP should I use?

Use a seasonal performance estimate from a suitable property assessment where available. A product's laboratory COP may overstate whole-year performance.

Does this include a heat pump grant?

Enter the installation cost after any grant or contribution you reasonably expect to receive.
